Percy Maimela | Artist

Guinness World Record holder

Percy Maimela (1985): - Self-taught, Maimelas eclectic signature looms from the fibres of his humble beginnings in the dusty streets of Pretoria, South Africa. He began experimenting with various mediums in his childhood and it was in 2014 that he decided to pursue a career in Art on a full-time basis, this encouraged by his confidence in his discovered identity as a contemporary African Artist and the depth of his now matured subject matter and Unique Mediums.

He is truly A one of a Kind in that his medium is both contemporary and challenges the intellect, he has created a new movement all together which is completely genius, founding techniques that invoke and challenge perception like his predecessors Masaccio, Matisse, Picasso et al, and as they say, history is kinder to the innovators than the imitators.

Maimelas preferred media include charcoal, painting and some traditional art forms, he lures the viewer in, with his ability to purge untraditional mediums like salt, sand, maize meal, ashes and ground coffee. Maimelas subject matter, is mostly inspired by advocacy, centred in his identity as an African, a real patriot, his main objective is to create awareness and a call to action to each one of us to never forget where we come from, true to our African Spirit of Ubuntu which insists that I only am, because you are and for this to be his legacy.

The Mask in Maimelas work is an embedded signature occurrence and unique only to his identity. It is a totem which signifies the past, present and future. The finger imprint lines allude to the complex fabrication of our DNA as a people and to show the possibilities, of what one can become in uniformity.
