Simon Venter South African, b. 1997
Curatorial reading
Venter repositions the biblical lawgiver within a contemporary and distinctly South African visual language. Moses is associated with exile, revelation, leadership and the passage from enslavement towards freedom. Here, the monumental tablets, gathered figures and disrupted landscape allow the ancient narrative to operate as a living metaphor for collective memory, moral authority and the difficult work of guiding people through uncertainty.
Relationship to The Spaces Between
The painting occupies the space between inherited sacred narrative and contemporary experience. It asks how ancient stories continue to shape ideas of law, identity, belonging and liberation in the present.
