Obsessive by Toni-Ann Ballenden reflects the artist’s remarkable journey from figuration into abstraction through her distinctive process of cutting apart earlier works and reconstructing them into entirely new compositions. The work holds a powerful sense of duality. The circular form evokes the nostalgic image of the television screen from an earlier era of broadcasting — a familiar symbol that recalls memory, endings, and the passing of time. Yet the circle also speaks to continuity, renewal, and the cyclical nature of life itself, where endings become beginnings. Through an intense and deeply intuitive process, Ballenden continued building and reconstructing the richly textured surface until the work reached a sense of emotional and visual resolution. The result is a compelling abstraction that carries both memory and transformation within its layered surface.
