Asanda Kupa’s impasto-laden paintings merge abstraction and figuration, layering earth-toned textures with human forms. His interplay of light and dark elevates social narratives of marginalization, creating deeply introspective works that balance historical context with raw self-expression.Asanda is interested in the role of community and the evolution of survival within his rural community. The history of survival consists of struggle and sabotage – celebrating a self-determining spirit within a long history of civic action, fueled by frustration and enduring drive of grassroots communities to improve their lives and the lives of future generations.
His recent series of tapestries are typical of his Eastern Cape community operating optimally; the weavers are literally illustrating their daily experiences as cameos embedded within the work, guided by Kupa's artistic instruction, direction and narrative.
Asanda Kupa, was born in 1981 in Molteno, a semi-rural village in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Kupa currently lives and works in Johannesburg, but frequently returns to his childhood home.
