In “The Tide will Change For The Better 3 ” we see a skilfully executed image of a young contemporary African woman, whom invokes the mystery of a Gauguin painting, with her rich red decorative dress and enigmatic solitary pose, her back to the viewer. Andrew is well known for his combinations of vintage documents which have been collaged together to create a new substrate, upon which his figurative image has been painted. The combination of historical vintage documents in this artwork narrates a story of old Johannesburg. Meaning in art is often created through the juxtaposition of one element against another, and in this work, the juxtaposition of the contemporary figure representing current generations and future generations contrasts with that which is past. “The tides will change for the better 3" engages the viewer with both the past and the present reflecting layers of historical significance, evoking questions in the viewer’s mind.
