March of the Dimes (2024) by Andrew Ntshabele takes its title from an archival document embedded within the work’s layered surface, alluding to a history of collective care, resilience, and the quiet mobilisation of hope in the face of adversity. Within the composition, children are depicted playing Follow the Leader , a familiar childhood game that becomes a poignant metaphor for guidance, continuity, and the passing of hope from one generation to the next. In keeping with Ntshabele’s ongoing visual language, archival documents and musical scores form the substrate upon which exquisitely rendered figures emerge, gracefully carving out space for those historically denied visibility. The work speaks tenderly of healing and remembrance, illuminating lives and narratives too often overlooked within our collective memory.
