A group Exhibition which invites a conversation between figurative and abstract art.
Two worlds, two visions. African art has in the last 10 years been defined by portraiture. The entire world was captivated by the uniqueness of our humanity, our personhood and being. Now, we find ourselves needing to be less obviously personal, more immersive. Now, it is also the time of abstraction. As Paul Klee remarked - in a time of fear, we turn to abstraction. The world is in flames. Anger and hate consume us. We need to free ourselves from the judgement of others. We need to abstract our selves, our lives. This is why we now find ourselves caught in a crux - ABSTRACTION AND THE FIGURE.
Ours is a world in which the particular and the obtuse converge, a world in which self exploration is also an exploration into the void. To suppose we have found ourselves is a terrible mistake. Ours is a world of wonder. We need to know when to open a door, to enter and exit a conversation, learn to trust ourselves and others, to believe, bind ourselves to faith But we also need to leap, to hold onto nothingness, and trust that therein - in a fathomless void - that beauty, truth, love, peace, calm and wisdom also resides.
