In this mixed media artwork by Andrew Ntshabele draws our attention to the two young children who stand barefoot on a rock, holding hands, with their backs turned toward the viewer. These masterfully painted life size children appear to be contemplative, looking back into the past. Typical of Ntshabele`s works, these children have been painted onto a collaged background, created from vintage documents. The children capture a sense of companionship by holding hands, however they are looking in different directions, the young girl looking up and the boy down. The viewer is invited to gaze with the children, and because the children are life size, the viewer feels as though they are the third person in the painting, allowing them to become fascinated by the specific details in the background that the children are looking at. There are pages from European books containing text and images published during South Africa’s colonial era. Although there is an acknowledgement of the impact of what has happened historically, Andrew draws our attention to a happier future, represented by the children who have been painted in bright colours contrasted upon the mostly monochromatic vintage background.
