“Abstraction can be said to be the consciousness of the artist manifested on canvas. Portraiture and figuration have defined African art, because African artists both in Africa and the diaspora are often critiqued for making art for arts sake, However, abstraction has facilitated an alternative - a more covert reflection on the human condition and experience, particularly through patterns and symbols that speak on existential thematic concerns found in philosophy, politics, and psychology." - Keisha Jacobs
Kindreds in Abstraction at Artyli Gallery brings together seven talented artists who are pushing the boundaries in abstraction. Samson Mnisi , Layziehound , Asanda Kupa , Talia Goldsmith , Hussein Salim, Sibusiso Ngwazi and Thokozani Mthiyane.
Kindreds in Abstraction opens on Saturday, 22 March at 11 am and concludes in May 2025.
