Bold color combinations and contrasting painting techniques are employed by Banele Njadayi in this artwork to differentiate animate from inanimate objects. Njadayis works are more than just trifling pictures. They are recordings of daily life; of events that seem insignificant yet contain a magnitude of information about this era in South African history. Whites are radiant, diffusing purity and pride in individual personal appearances, even after the walk to get here. Both background and foreground appear fresh after an earlier downpour, which is a grace because public spaces are nowadays rarely cleaned by bankrupt municipalities. The opportunistic ‘spaza’ shop at the end of the taxi queue continues to serve the needs of the people ‘come rain or shine’.
