The artworks of Thokozani Mthiyane oscillate between figuration and abstraction. During the formative years of his artistic practice, Mthiyane offered a stylistic introspection and engagement on the evolving social and political landscape of South Africa; which was significantly influenced by his tutelage under artists’ Sfiso KaMkame and Thami Jali. Mthiyane's thematic concern has since evolved to often incorporate African storytelling traditions, cultures and symbolism, in addition to drawing from poetry and jazz that serve as fundamental sources of inspiration for his thought process and intuitive creativity. The narratives within the vivid paintings of Mthiyane are relayed through layers of texture and meaning simultaneously, owed to his use of discarded found objects and earthly elements of soil and wind.
