Layziehound Coka began his artistic career with portraiture and figuration influenced by racial segregation owed to the apartheid regime. In more recent years, Coka began incorporating abstraction that holds spiritual undertones and reflections of time. Similar to the stylistic presentation of Cubism, although more defined, Coka’s canvases feature geometric lines, separating his thought process and creative ideas. Coka’s colour palette is diverse, shifting between the luminous and the dark. Coka’s thematic concern ranges from the political, the social, cultural, religious and the environmental; with his depictions capturing real happenings within South African and broader global society.
