The artworks of Steve Maphosa are rooted in the exploration of identity shaped by migration and  heritage. Through art, Maphosa translates his experiences growing up in a multicultural environment - relayed through his use of vivid colour and texture. Yet his primary thematic concern are the sensations of the immigrant - as someone subjected to foreignness and otherness and situated in a liminal space, that is in-between places, cultures and memories. There is a tone of the individual and the collective in Maphosa’s works - reminding us of the human condition, that even amidst our differences, there is a common thread.
